The 'Cutting Project'

The Cutting Project was a second-year assignment given to Ruby Elizia at the University of Westminster. She based her concept on palaeontology, focusing on the Jurassic stegosaurus, known for its defensive spikes. Inspired by the idea of self-protection, Ruby decided to design an outerwear piece intended to promote safety - particularly for women walking alone at night.

To realise her vision, she sourced a second-hand tent online and began deconstructing it in her bedroom. The final coat is made from three layers of up-cycled materials, including second-hand faux leather to give the garment structure and durability. Incorporating spikes into the design, Ruby reimagined the classic trench coat into a bold, protective outerwear piece.
